Today we’re talking bursitis what is it? and how chiropractors can help treat it?
When talking about bursitis, its often known as a working man’s disease due to the repetitive motion or impacts that cause it to occur. Because it is an overuse syndrome, proper structure and function of the body is integral in treating it.
The top 3 bursa problems are the shoulder, hip and knee.
A bursa is a sac of fluid that acts as a cushion to protect the bones and tendons from rubbing when the surround a joint. When a joint is overworked for an extended period of time from work or sport it will put your muscles and tendons under pressure, this… is when a bursa can become inflamed.
But can also be inflamed due to improper function. An injury cause other muscles to work extra hard as they protect that injured muscle from working hard. But as a result muscles end up becoming inflamed themselves.
The symptoms often involved with bursitis are pain, swelling and also tenderness of the joint and is most common in individuals who are over the age of 40. There are different types of bursitis that affect different parts of your body. The most commonly affected are the knee, elbow and hip.
BUT!!! Overall, the shoulder is the joint which is known to be effected by bursitis most frequently. This is because it can occur in everyday things, we do such as gardening, painting, tennis, golf, throwing sports, surfing, skiing and many more activities we participate in.
- Knee bursitis is common in those that work on their knees like plumbers
- Hip bursitis are more frequent in those who have pelvis and leg dysfunction and pain.
Now that we know a little background of bursitis lets look at how chiropractors can help!
First and foremost we need to work out why you are having bursitis. Test flexibility strength and other functional tests of that particular area to work out what muscles need stretching muscles need strengthening. Initially we are able to manage and relieve the swelling of bursitis WITHOUT the use of medication or prescriptions simply by delivering a gentle, non-invasive adjustment. A chiropractic adjustment install the proper function of the area and intern cause that joint to work “less hard” us allowing that joint to repair and reduce inflammation
Having the ability to increase joint mobility and improving your nervous system through chiropractic adjustments allows your body to manage the symptoms caused by bursitis better. We believe that by correcting the problem we don’t have to deal with the side-effects. And there’s been lots of research out there about non-steroidal anti-inflammatory injections or cortizone and the negative long-term effects of doing so. Because if you think about it when you numb an area you will do things that you probably shouldn’t do and intern make the problem worse because you can’t feel it.
So let’s leave things like cortizone injections to the last minute and treat your shoulder hip elbow and knee bursitis problems naturally with Chiropractic, exercises, and ice therapy.
