What is a disc bulge?

The discs between your spinal bones act as cushions. A disc can become irritated, bulge or herniate, which may cause back or neck pain and sometimes pain, tingling or weakness in an arm or leg.

A disc finding on a scan does not always mean you have pain, and many people with disc changes improve without surgery. What matters is how your spine is working and what is actually driving your symptoms.

Symptoms people notice

• Back or neck pain that is worse with sitting, bending or lifting
• Pain, tingling or numbness travelling into a leg or arm
• Stiffness, especially in the morning or after long periods in one position
• Symptoms that keep returning

How we approach it

• A detailed history and examination, including nerve and movement testing
• A review of any scans you already have
• Imaging referral only if it is clinically advised
• A plain-language explanation of what we found and your options, including when a doctor or specialist is the better choice
• If chiropractic care suits you, a plan that may include adjustments, exercises and spinal traction (decompression)

Go to an emergency department or call 000 if you have new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin or inner thighs, or rapidly worsening weakness in a leg or arm.

Most disc problems are managed without surgery, but it depends on your findings. If we think you need a surgical opinion, we will say so and refer you.

Should I bring my MRI or X-rays?

Yes, please bring any scans and reports you have. They help us understand your history.

Can a disc heal?

Symptoms often settle over time with the right care, but results vary from person to person and we do not promise specific outcomes.
