Spinal traction uses a gentle, controlled pulling force to position and stretch the spine. You will often hear it called spinal decompression, because the aim is to reduce the compressive load on the discs, joints and nerves of the spine.
At Robina Chiropractic Wellness Centre, traction is part of Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP), where it is used to work towards healthier spinal alignment alongside adjustments and exercises. It is not a stand-alone treatment, and it is not right for everyone. We are the largest CBP practice on the Gold Coast, and traction is a core part of the care we provide.

Neck (cervical) traction is used when the natural curve of the neck has been lost, or when posture, neck pain or neck-related headaches are part of the picture. Your neck is supported in a comfortable position while a controlled force is applied for a set time.
The setup is chosen after your examination and any imaging that is clinically advised, so it matches what we find in your neck rather than a one-size-fits-all routine.
Lumbar (lower back) traction may be considered for back pain, sciatica or disc-related symptoms where your findings suggest it could help. It is combined with the rest of your care plan, which may include adjustments and corrective exercises.

People with neck pain, back pain, posture concerns or scoliosis are often considered for traction. We screen for conditions that make traction unsuitable, and we will tell you if another approach, or referral to another health professional, is the better choice.
Many people find traction relaxing. If anything feels uncomfortable, tell us and we will adjust it.

Why I ask you to do traction
Starting traction
The two terms are often used for the same thing: controlled traction of the spine. We use both so you can find what you are looking for.
It should not. Tell us if anything feels uncomfortable and we will change the setup.
It depends on your assessment and goals. We explain the recommended plan and cost before any care begins.
Sometimes, depending on your findings. We assess you first and tell you honestly whether traction is suitable.

Chiropractic care is not suitable for everyone, and results vary from person to person. All health care carries some risk, so ask us about the benefits and risks for your situation. If you have sudden or severe symptoms, such as loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin, a sudden severe headache, chest pain or new weakness, seek urgent medical care.
