What is sciatica?

Sciatica describes pain, tingling or numbness that travels from the lower back or buttock down the leg. It can be caused by irritation of a nerve in the lower back, and there are several possible reasons for that, so the cause needs to be worked out.

Many people improve over time, but ongoing or worsening symptoms deserve an assessment.

• Imaging referral only if clinically advised
